monterey peninsula

A visit to the Monterey Peninsula offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in California. From dramatic ocean views and charming seaside towns to world-famous attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium and 17-Mile Drive, there is so much to explore.

If you’re planning your first visit, a three-day stay is the perfect amount of time to experience the highlights while still enjoying the relaxed pace that makes Monterey Bay so special.

Here is one of our favorite ways to spend three unforgettable days on the Monterey Peninsula.

Day One: Discover Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Begin your Monterey adventure along historic Cannery Row, once the center of the region’s sardine-packing industry and now a lively waterfront district filled with restaurants, shops, and ocean views.

The highlight of the area is the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, widely considered one of the best aquariums in the world. Exhibits showcase the extraordinary marine life of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, including sea otters, jellyfish, and mesmerizing kelp forests.

After visiting the aquarium, take a leisurely walk along the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. This scenic waterfront path stretches for miles and offers beautiful views of the bay, especially near sunset.

Finish the evening with dinner overlooking the water at one of the many restaurants along Cannery Row or nearby Fisherman’s Wharf.

Day Two: Experience the Legendary 17-Mile Drive

No visit to the Monterey Peninsula is complete without driving the famous 17-Mile Drive, one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world.

The drive winds through the prestigious Pebble Beach community and features breathtaking ocean views, rugged cliffs, and iconic landmarks.

Highlights along the route include:

  • The Lone Cypress, one of the most photographed trees in North America
  • The dramatic shoreline at Spanish Bay
  • The famous greens of Pebble Beach Golf Links

Plan to take your time and stop frequently to enjoy the scenery and take photos. The entire drive typically takes two to three hours if you explore the viewpoints along the way.

Day Three: Relax and Explore Pacific Grove

On your final day, slow down and explore the charming coastal town of Pacific Grove, often called the “last hometown.”

Start the morning with a walk along the spectacular Pacific Grove Coastal Trail, where waves crash against rocky coves and sea birds glide above the shoreline.

Nearby Lovers Point Park is a favorite local gathering spot with scenic picnic areas and panoramic views of Monterey Bay.

If you’re visiting between late fall and early spring, don’t miss the famous Monarch Grove Sanctuary, where thousands of monarch butterflies gather during their annual migration.

Spend the afternoon browsing Pacific Grove’s charming downtown shops or relaxing by the ocean before heading out to dinner.

Innkeeper Tip

The Monterey Peninsula is known for its beautiful but ever-changing coastal weather. Even on sunny days, temperatures near the ocean can feel cool. We always recommend bringing a light jacket when exploring the coast, especially in the evening when ocean breezes pick up.

Early morning and sunset are also the most magical times to walk the shoreline trails, when the light over Monterey Bay is especially beautiful.
